to earn first career Pitcher of the Week honors.
May 8, 2006
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After throwing his first career shutout against Seton Hall
on Saturday, sophomore Matt Tosoni was named the BIG EAST Conference
Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday
afternoon. Tosoni struck out a career-high eight batters and allowed just five
hits, as the Red Storm defeated the Pirates 4-0 in the first game of a Saturday,
May 6, doubleheader. The sophomore threw 74 of his 106 pitches for strikes
and lowered his season ERA over a half a run from 3.05 to 2.50. His second
consecutive win as St. John's University's No. 1 starter improved his record to
3-1 with a 2.29 ERA in six BIG EAST appearances.
For Tosoni, the Pitcher of the Week honor was the first of his career, and for
St. John's, it was the team's first such honor of the season. Last week, senior
Will Vogl was recognized as the Red Storm's first BIG EAST Player of the
Week for his part in a series win at Rutgers (April 28-30).
