Oshawa Starts Fifth Intercounty Baseball League
Season Tomorrow

OSHAWA -- The Oshawa Dodgers have two more games under their
belts than they usually do at this time of the year.
Now it's time to see if they're prepared to hit new heights in the
Intercounty Baseball League.
Set to start their fifth season tomorrow at Kinsmen Stadium, the
Dodgers head in having played a couple of pre-season games for the
first time in team history.
The Dodgers played a pair of games against Eastern Ontario Baseball
Association opposition, swatting the Kendal Royals 10-1 Saturday
before stealing a 6-5 decision from the Ajax Spartans Sunday.
"It felt good to on the field and play a game," new manager Mike
Prosper said after the first game. "We hit the ball well."
Troy May, who has handed the managing reins over to Prosper but will
stay on as team president and third base coach, was particularly
pleased with Sunday's effort, when Ryan Crotin delivered a three-run
double with two outs in the final inning to win the game.
"We are never out of a game as long as we have an out left," said May.
"(This) was a great character builder for us. It was only an exhibition
game but it shows the heart this team has."
Crotin is a sight for sore eyes where the Dodgers are concerned. After
spending a year playing professionally in Australia and Germany, the
27-year-old from Whitby returns to third base as the team's career
leader in average, on base percentage, doubles and triples.
In the two exhibition games, Crotin had four doubles and eight RBIs.
Key additions to the team include right-handed pitchers Marek Deska
and John Frederick and lefty Ian Okorofsky. Returnees include first
baseman Ken Calway, 2005 IBL all-star Brad McConnachie and
left-handed pitcher Matt Tosoni, who missed the entire 2005 season
with ulcerative colitis.
The Dodgers are coming off their worst season yet in the league, as
they finished with a 9-26 record and were swept in four straight games
by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the playoffs.
They open up the 2006 campaign Saturday at 2 p.m. against the
Stratford Nationals, who have new ownership and a new name from the
Storm team that went 1-33 a year ago.
NOTES: Ken Calway went 3/4 with 2 doubles and four RBIs in
Saturday's exhibition win. Brian Sewell started and went three innings,
striking out four, while Ian Okorofsky went four innings, striking out six...
Jon Theibaud went 2/2 with two walks Sunday, while Junior call-up Chris
Sheridan drew three walks and scored two runs... New Dodger Marek
Deska, currently a sophomore at the University of Bridgeport, was
named New York Collegiate Athletic Conference Co-Pitcher of the
Week last week. He earned his second and third wins of the season
and lowered his team-leading ERA to 3.40... Veteran Dodger and
University of Maine senior pitcher Scott Robinson of Ajax was named
the America East Pitcher of the Week. He earned the 19th save of his
career, tying him for the school record, and also threw a complete
game, nine-inning shutout... The Dodgers have formed a partnership
with the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, who will be on hand Saturday
and at various other games throughout the season providing
information leading up to Crohn's and Colitis Day June 24, when the
Dodgers take on the Hamilton Cardinals... The Dodgers open the
season with four straight home dates, including a doubleheader against
the London Majors May 13... Tickets are available at the gate for $5
per game. Kids 12 and under are free. Season tickets are available for
$50 for 18 home games.
